Pro-Palestinian demonstrators have forced an Israeli cruise ship away from the port of Heraklion in Greece, without disembarking passengers.

A pro-Palestinian protest took place at the port of Agios Nikolaos in Crete, where demonstrators unfurled a Palestinian flag and expressed solidarity with people in Gaza. The protest targeted the Israeli cruise ship Crown Iris, which has faced similar demonstrations at other Greek ports in recent months. 

The protest follows an earlier incident where passengers were prevented from disembarking at Heraklion. While some local merchants see the arrival of the cruise ship as beneficial for business, others have joined the protests, emphasizing humanitarian concerns over economic gain. Greek public opinion remains generally positive toward Jewish people but less favorable toward the Israeli government.

A Palestinian flag unfurled in the port of Agios Nikolaos on Crete, a farewell to Israeli tourists on board the Crown Iris, and a gesture of solidarity with the people the Israeli state is starving in Gaza. The Crown Iris, no stranger to such political demonstrations, responded with insults. A day earlier, a more vocal demonstration prevented its passengers from disembarking at Heraklion. And it wasn't the first time. The appearance of the Crown Iris has sparked similar demonstrations on other Greek islands and ports in the past two months against the genocide in Gaza. Some merchants think Heraklion's loss is Agios Nikolaos' gain. We think it's a positive thing for the cruise ship to come here. Other people may not agree, but that's their business. We know it's good for the town. Most merchants here agree with that, but not all. Vassilis Hadzidakis has made this sign the centrepiece of his sales pitch. We put the banner up every time an Israeli cruise ship comes in. In the beginning it was just me, but now there are five of us. We want to send an anti-Zionist message. Not all merchants are the same. Some of us don't put shekels above humanity. Most Greeks have a favourable view of Jewish people, according to opinion polls, but not of Israel and the Israeli government. Only one in five Greeks approves of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and only one in three Greeks has a favourable view of the state of Israel. Extra police and Coast Guard forces were bussed into Agios Nikolaos to form a security cordon around the ship. But many here feel that even if individual Israelis are not to blame for what their government is doing, their enjoyment of Greece taints those who enable it.
