Despite the pushback, the event was allowed to proceed as new protest veto powers are not yet in effect. Police maintained a strong presence to monitor the situation, and the gathering remained peaceful with only minor incidents reported.

There's only about a hundred or so, so a relatively small group compared to normal, potentially because there has been significant pushback to prevent this rally from going ahead. Our State Premier, Jacinta Allen, warned activists to stay away. Josh Frydenberg said it would pour fuel on a fire of hate and Melbourne's Jewish leaders called it an act of anti-semitism to gather so soon after what happened at Bond Beach. There is also a significant police presence here. Those powers to veto protests don't come into effect until January, so today's protest is allowed to go ahead. I asked the Chief of Police earlier today for his thoughts. Take a listen. I think it's very inappropriate to protest on the on the back of what occurred at Mono. People need to be sensitive to other people's feelings. That was an absolute tragedy and we need to respect each other. Now the event here is relatively small. It has so far been peaceful. There was a little bit of yelling that just went on while that audio grab played, but police will remain here into this evening in case there is any clash with counter protesters, just as we saw yesterday evening.
