Authorities are investigating a fatal plane crash in North Carolina that killed seven people, including former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, his wife Christina, stepdaughter Emma, and grandson Ryder. The Cessna C-550 crashed shortly after takeoff while attempting to return to the airport, and a post-impact fire consumed much of the aircraft.

Investigators have sent the cockpit voice recorder to Washington for analysis to determine the cause of the crash. Among the victims were also Dennis and Jack Dutton and Craig Wadsworth. A memorial for the Biffle family is growing in their hometown as the investigation continues.

We're now to the search for the cause of the deadly plane crash yesterday in North Carolina. Seven people were killed, including former race car driver Greg Biffle and his wife and children. Investigators hope to find clues on the cockpit voice recorder, which was sent to Washington today. Cristian Benavides has the latest. Today, federal investigators were at the site of the crash, sifting through the wreckage, trying to determine how the plane went down yesterday morning. Post-impact fire consumed the majority of the fuselage and the inboard wing sections. Both engines were present with the main wreckage. It is unknown if former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, an experienced pilot, was flying the aircraft at the time of the crash. Three months ago, he posted this photo from the cockpit of the same plane, with the caption, excited to get back flying again. Do we know who was piloting the aircraft? We do know three of the occupants did possess a pilot's license. Just after 10 a.m. yesterday, the Cessna C-550 took off from Statesville, headed for Sarasota, Florida. Four minutes into the flight, the jet turned around and headed for the airport. It crashed while attempting to land. I spoke to Kathy Grosu on the phone. Her daughter, Christina Biffle, sent an urgent text message from the plane. She said something like, we're in trouble, emergency landing. And I texted back, what's wrong, is the plane? And then the next thing was SOS. Grosu says when her daughter didn't text back, she called the airport and was told there was a crash. Her son-in-law Greg, her daughter Christina, her stepdaughter Emma, and grandson Ryder were all killed. On Wednesday, she said her grandson, who calls her Nini, noticed some of his presents under the Christmas tree. He said, Nini, can I open up one of my presents? And I said, no, you got to wait till Christmas. And I regret that, saying that. Every hour since this has happened, why I didn't let him open up one present. I didn't, and I feel so badly about that. There is a growing memorial for Greg Biffle and his family here in his hometown. Now, Kathy, in that phone interview, told me that the family was flying out to celebrate Biffle's birthday at the time of the crash. They were traveling with Dennis and Jack Dutton and Craig Wadsworth, who were also killed.
