The darkness does not get the final word. It was billed as a night of unity, but as our Prime Minister arrived, anger boiled over. Anthony Albanese and his wife Jodie braved the hatred to stand alongside hurting Australians. One man trying to rush him was quickly moved on by police. There's a heavy presence, snipers on rooftops, overseeing heavily armed tactical officers patrolling the vigil. The New South Wales Premier received a standing ovation. Who has not missed a funeral, a synagogue service or an opportunity to be with the Jewish community this week? Thanks to the Jewish community of Australia on this last night of Hanukkah, you have reclaimed Bondi Beach for us. Praise too for the State Opposition Leader Kelly Sloan, who was there during the attack helping others. And what I saw will haunt me forever, but I saw police running into the scene fast and unhesitating, with guns drawn, headed into danger. At 6 47 p.m. the exact time the first shots rang out, there was a minute's silence, the crowd speaking as one with their hearts. When a community stands tall, the world notices. First responders stood shoulder to shoulder. The horrific attack may have claimed 15 lives and devastated countless more, but from his hospital bed, Bondi hero Ahmed El Ahmed sent words of hope. Today I stand with you, my brothers and sisters. As the name of the youngest victim, ten-year-old Matilda, was sung, her parents danced arm-in-arm. Then her father helped light the menorah, the Jewish symbol of light, as landmarks around the city were also illuminated. By daybreak, the floral memorial that grew over the pain was being collected. Cards kept, flowers freeze-dried to be turned into a sculpture, as the acts of community continue to grow. It's here at Sydney's Blood Donor Centre where the true face of Australia really shines. Last week, when supplies ran low, 50,000 came and donated, and a further 120,000 have also signed up to that call to arms. Just the outpouring of decency and goodness and kindness that we have seen in our donor centres, we've never seen anything like this. True leaders at all levels, drawing our society back together.
