Preparing your landscape for the change in seasons

It is a beautiful summer day down here in Centennial and I have Tony Hahn, a certified arborist as well as a member of the Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado with me and we are talking about what we need to do to get ready for fall and then winter. I know it is still hot out there. People are still excited about the summer season, but before you know it, the weather is going to change. Yeah. We're going to start to see some cooler temperatures around here and we have to start to think about our landscapes and what we should be doing as far as the winter goes. You're very perceptive and day length, you being a weather person, day length triggers a lot of chemical processes in trees such as root growth. Fall is a great time to help those roots grow so we can root fertilize, we can fertilize grass and day length plays a really, really critical role so as we get into the fall and temperatures cool off, that's when we want to help the roots. For a healthy tree or a healthy shrub or a healthy turf, you have to have healthy roots. Makes sense. Yeah. Healthy roots make a healthy plant. So keep the water coming, fertilize appropriately, don't do it too much. What about, we're talking about the roots and all of that, but exterior wise, we still got to do some pruning and stuff too. We have John Michael out here who is going to be doing a little bit of pruning. Why is this so necessary to do now? A couple of things that I worry about is large pieces of dead wood are really critical to get out because you don't want hazardous wood in your trees. Some of these branches can collect a lot of that heavy, wet snow so we want to reduce the weight. We want to reduce the weight on some of these branch ends where the snow will collect and possibly break. And look at him, he's already up there and he's going to get down to business. That's pretty impressive. Yeah. Alright, so we got to just make sure that we're watering appropriately and doing that fertilizing as well. In the fall, the key is root growth. I always emphasize that. It's two times of the year we can get good root growth, spring and fall. Critical things for the roots to grow, water and fertilizer. So keep the water going. Easy enough.
