This region is a key location when it comes to the history of Christianity. The pope came to Turkey to commemorate the 1700th anniversary of a landmark event known as the Council of Nicaea. He was joined by other religious leaders. Part of the papal mission, continuing to try to heal the long-standing historical divide between the Orthodox and Catholic churches. We must strongly reject the use of religion for justifying war, violence, or any form of fundamentalism. A message that resonates in many corners, particularly in this country.
