A new poll reveals that 56% of U.S. adults would prefer to adopt permanent daylight saving time, which would provide more daylight in the evening. In contrast, 42% of respondents favor permanent standard time, which offers more morning light. Only 12% support the current practice of changing clocks twice a year.

Efforts to change the system have been ongoing in Congress, with a bipartisan bill advancing in the Senate in 2022 but facing opposition from standard time supporters. Currently, Arizona and Hawaii are the only states that observe standard time year-round. The tradition of changing clocks began as an energy conservation measure during World War I.

Twice a year we're given advice on how to adjust to the time change, but when it comes to the practice the numbers are clear. A new poll shows only 12% of people favor keeping the ritual of changing their clocks. 47% oppose the system. When we choose not to end this absurd practice we do so to the detriment of Americans health. Some in Congress have been trying to change the law for years. They hoped it might finally happen after President Trump weighed in. This should be the easiest one of all but it's a 50-50 issue. The tougher question is where to stop the clock. 56% of people polled said they'd like permanent daylight saving time with more light in the evening and 42% would prefer standard time with more light in the morning. In 2022 the Senate advanced a bipartisan bill that would move to permanent daylight saving time, but it was still met by staunch standard time supporters. Sometimes we have to live with an uneasy compromise between competing priorities and interests. That's doubly true when you can when considering how the movement of the stars and the planets affect the lives of 350 million souls spread across our vast continental nation. Arizona and Hawaii are the only states that have moved to standard time year-round.
