This is where the EU ends. People at this Polish farming village next to the border with Belarus have been living with uncertainty and fear. We do not know how to plan for the future. We do not know how to live. We don't know what's going to happen next month, next year or even next week. Soldiers and border guards are everywhere. There are also threats from Belarus. Polish politicians accuse Belarus of trying to destabilize the country by commercializing migrant crossings. Until this fence was built, villagers used to either help people or call authorities to turn in migrants. People in this town have witnessed Belarusian helicopters enter Polish airspace, so they are aware of the threats. But many also see troop build-up and border fence equipped with motion sensors and cameras as scaremongering. The summer season is crucial for eastern Poland's hotels and small businesses. They want visitors to return. We don't feel any danger. We are open to visitors at our hotel. We welcome everyone who would like to visit us. The return of all the tourists is unlikely as the government plans to deploy up to 10,000 troops at the border. Soldiers will use drones and patrol the border where there is no fence. We are here to stop illegal migration. We are here because border guard asked for support of Polish armed forces. Kamil lives a few kilometers from the border and believes heavy-handed measures are counterproductive. Activists say they are finding more people who were pushed back into Belarus crossing back into Poland. And some Polish villagers say they can't turn a blind eye to wounded or hungry humans. In 2021, I started putting green lamps on the houses. It is a signal to refugees that the house is friendly and they can get humanitarian aid. My family has been through a lot. My wife was pulled out of the car and police security aimed a gun at her head. We are not going to stop helping people.
