Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed hope for the imminent release of remaining hostages, while U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted the logistical challenges that need to be addressed during the talks.

Despite cautious optimism, there is significant skepticism about the likelihood of a comprehensive agreement, with former Israeli ambassador Alan Pincus estimating only a 50% chance for a hostage and prisoner exchange and even lower odds for broader peace measures. Meanwhile, fighting continues in Gaza, with reports of ongoing strikes and casualties, and no official ceasefire in place.

Peace talks on Gaza set to begin in Egypt

President Trump is urging negotiators meeting in Egypt today to quote, move fast. This is amid all these hopes that an agreement can be reached to bring an end to the war in Gaza after Hamas said it had accepted some elements of the White House's 20-point peace plan. Over the weekend, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he hoped to announce the release of the remaining hostages being held in the enclave in the coming days. Speaking on Face the Nation yesterday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio outlined some of the logistical hurdles that will need to be ironed out at today's talks. What those talks should be about, and some of that conversation's already happening now, it's not waiting until Monday in Cairo, is the logistics behind the release of these hostages. How do you stop the fighting? Who's gonna go in and get them? When are they gonna be released? Where are they picked up? What are the processes for this? CBS News reporter Haley Ott is following developments for us from Tel Aviv and joins us from there now this morning. Good morning, Haley. I'm wondering what the mood is in Israel now about the prospects for a peace deal. We've been here before, but perhaps there's a greater sense of hope. You tell me. Good morning. Well, people here are hopeful, but there have been proposals floated before, as you said, that have fallen through. So they're reluctant to really get their hopes up. And coming up to two years since the October 7th attack, there's a real sense of desperation here to get the remaining hostages home. Earlier this morning, we spoke to former Israeli ambassador to the US, Alan Pincus, who gave us his read on how he thinks these negotiations will go, whether there will actually be a hostage and prisoner exchange. Take a listen. I'd give it a 50% shot of happening because both sides feel the pressure to get this done. Israel feels the pressure from the US and Hamas feels the pressure from Qatar, from Turkey, from Egypt, from Jordan, and from Saudi Arabia. As for the rest of the plan, the likelihood goes down from 50% to maybe 10%. I just doubt it's going to happen. Even this phase is going to be, is ambiguous and amenable to interpretations, and I don't see it going smoothly. So Pincus told us there was hope, but also a lot of factors that could lead to these negotiations breaking down. And Haley, in the meantime, has there been any let up in the fighting in Gaza? Well, we were near the border with Gaza yesterday and heard and felt a number of very large explosions. And our sources there say, while there have been fewer strikes since the proposal was announced, strikes are continuing. At least 24 people were killed in Gaza in the last day, according to health officials there. And an Israeli government spokesperson said, certain kinds of bombings had stopped, but that there currently is no ceasefire in Gaza. All right, Haley Ott, live for us in Tel Aviv. Thank you, Haley.
