A man has died following a major rescue operation two hours west of Sydney after a truck collided with a railway bridge triggering a collapse. Emergency services worked to free the trapped passenger but he couldn't be saved.

A truck collided with a railway bridge on Inch Street in Lithgow, resulting in a partial collapse that trapped a 34-year-old passenger inside the vehicle. Emergency services responded quickly, with the 38-year-old driver managing to escape with minor injuries and being taken to hospital. 

Despite extensive rescue efforts involving cranes and a rescue helicopter, the trapped passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the crash, and the road remains closed as crews work to clear the wreckage.

A miscalculation that turned deadly. The bridge had semi-collapsed on top of the cabin of the cherry picker and one person remained inside. A devastating outcome for what was an all day long rescue turned recovery operation. Both were local men based here on the Blue Mountains, one of whom has tragically lost their life. Emergency services rushed to Inch Street in Lithgow shortly before 9am after a truck collided with a railway bridge. The 38-year-old driver had managed to free himself, escaping with minor injuries before being taken to Lithgow Hospital. However, efforts turned solely on helping free a 34-year-old passenger who was trapped beneath the collapsed bridge. It was a dangerous scene for emergency services to approach. A rescue helicopter was called in, sitting idle as rescue efforts continued. We've had to use cranes and so forth in order to try to move the bridge and safely remove the vehicle and attend to the rest of the scene. However, before the passenger was pulled from the wreck, he was pronounced dead at the scene. We're thinking about those workers, colleagues and family, but obviously that would be distressing for everybody involved. My thoughts are also with the two Sydney Trains employees after this incident. Life work have been notified of the incident and the exact circumstances surrounding the crash are being investigated. It's a very unfortunate and tragic result. We'll be supporting not only our own staff but our people across the railway who will feel this loss.
