A swim ban remains in effect for today at all of Long Island's oceanfront state parks.

Jones Beach and other parts of Long Island's South Shore experienced extensive flooding after Hurricane Erin brought large waves and storm surges. The storm caused water to breach protective sand berms, flooding the shoreline and areas beneath the boardwalk, with some recreational spaces turning into saltwater pools. 

Swimming remains prohibited at Long Island's three ocean-facing state parks due to dangerous surf, strong rip currents, and ongoing coastal flooding. Crews are actively working to pump water out of the affected areas, and officials are reassessing conditions daily to determine when it will be safe to reopen the beaches.

That includes Jones Beach, and that's where we find news. 12 Long Island, Jonathan Gordon. That's where he is this afternoon. And Jonathan, what's the latest there? Well, it is such a beautiful day for the beach means such a stark contrast to what things looked like yesterday, but beachgoers here are still being told by the governor's office to stay out of the water with swimming. Still off limits at Long Islands, three ocean facing state parks. News 12 drone caught the full scale of the flooding along Jones Beach from Field 6 to Field 2 State Parks. Officials said water breached the protective sand berms near the Central Mall and rushed around to flood the shoreline and underneath the boardwalk. Through the other side, Jones Beach saw extensive flooding throughout the park. Last night's high tide is when it started and this morning's high tide contributed to it. As a result, chairs were left floating benches, sunk and entire recreational spaces turned into saltwater pools. One point, the entire beach front was covered with water. All of the sand was underwater. Officials said the water never got over the boardwalk, but it was close. This sand there. It swept all the sand in. I mean, Mother Nature is unforgiving. The storm left only a thin sandbar for beachgoers to enjoy today. When we pulled up, my husband said, we can't go out there. Look where the water is. I'm like, Oh my God, I just realized. You know we can be staff reported dangerously high surf strong rip currents, coastal flooding, and beach erosion, making it still too unsafe, leading to the state's decision for today. Parks officials said they will continue to reevaluate when to lift the swimming ban on a day by day basis. And right now, crews are actually digging trenches and they're pumping water out from some of these flooded areas. They're trying to get it out into the ocean as quickly as possible. One state parks official believes they might be able to get a majority of that water out of this area back into the ocean by the end of the day. We're in Utah, Nassau County, Jonathan Gordon.
