Crowds gathered to welcome the released individuals, expressing overwhelming joy despite warnings from Israeli authorities against public celebrations.

According to an Israeli NGO, nearly 2,000 prisoners and detainees were released from a total prison population of about 11,000. While most were taken to Gaza and greeted by crowds in Khan Younis, more than 150 were reportedly deported to Egypt, leaving some families still waiting for reunions.

It's an overwhelming joy, great joy to be reunited with my family and loved ones, this man said. The chapters closed but there's a lump in the throat as we left our brothers and dear ones. Indeed, the close to 2,000 prisoners and detainees released are from a total prison population according to an Israeli NGO of about 11,000. We were searching carefully for Mohamed's name, this man said of his brother imprisoned for 13 life sentences. When we saw his name, we couldn't contain our joy. Couldn't contain it despite, he says, being told by an Israeli officer not to celebrate. That warning spread widely in the form of leaflets dropped from drones. Most of the released were taken to Gaza and there too crowds greeted the buses that rolled into Khan Younis, city of destruction. Despite all the devastation in Gaza, this man said, its beauty would always be much better than the life we had in prison. But not all prisoners saw reunions. More than 150 were reportedly deported to Egypt. Waiting families, waiting still.
