Palestinian President accepts PM Shtayyeh's resignation

Following months of international pressure, the Palestinian Authority's prime minister has decided to hand in his resignation. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has been under a lot of pressure to reshuffle the government and establish a political framework capable of governing a post-war Palestinian state, or even advancing towards a two-state solution. I see the next stage and its challenges require new government and political arrangements, taking into consideration the evolving situation in Gaza, national unity talks, the urgent need for a Palestinian consensus based on national foundations, and the extension of the authority of the government over the entire land of Palestine. Therefore, I submit the resignation of the government to the president for him to take necessary actions to serve our great people. Although it is considered to be a step towards facilitating the peace process, the future prospects seem to be limited. The resignation of the government is the best news we have heard. You know, the economic conditions are worsening. The resigned government is responsible for these dire economic conditions because its ministers have not worked enough to improve them. The government had to create alternative solutions for the Palestinian people. The resignation is indeed good news. The best scenario will be a new technocratic government agreed by both Fatah and Hamas. This is the demand of the Palestinian people. Without political consensus, Fatah will remain in control of the occupied West Bank. And we don't know who will control Gaza without Hamas' consent. Hamas and Fatah have the constant differences. Leaders in Fatah and Hamas have national responsibilities. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has long rejected the possibility of the Palestinian authorities' rule over Gaza after the war. It was an order, and their order is being carried out. Would it have any impact? Of course not. Because no matter what they do, in order for them to breathe life in an authority that has no credibility. Regardless, the next government has its work cut out with Israeli troops and settlers on a killing spree in the occupied territories. At least 400 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since October 7. Meanwhile, the situation in Gaza is getting worse by the hour as the Israeli army continues its relentless military campaign. Rafah is the core of the humanitarian operation and UNRWA is the backbone of that effort. An all-out Israeli offensive on the city would not only be terrifying for more than a million Palestinian civilians sheltering there, it would put the final nail in the coffin of our aid programs. Netanyahu says even if a deal is struck with Hamas, it would only delay the operation in Rafah where more than a million Palestinians are trapped.
