Had it come at night, it would have had catastrophic results with huge loss of life. But people here have lost everything. Their houses are now buried under several meters of mud. They have lost their belongings. They don't have any clothes. No clean drinking water. And they will need huge support from the authorities in order to put them back on their feet. We have visited businesses which were completely obliterated. All their merchandise is now buried. And people are trying to salvage. The recent flood has brought unprecedented devastation, shattering the records of the past century. Nearly five days have passed since the disaster struck, yet no government aid has reached the area. Families are struggling to survive on their own, and the absence of support has left people feeling abandoned. The monsoon season is not yet over. Pounding rain in the southern port city of Karachi has inundated most of that city. Poor planning and rampant corruption which is now institutionalized has led to this catastrophe. But here in the northern regions, particularly in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Bune district is the worst hit, hundreds dead, and the search for the missing still continues. It will of course take a huge effort for the authorities to be able to pour in resources to help these people. We've never witnessed horrific floods of this scale. Everyone here has lost everything, and now we need urgent help. We're trying our best with our resources available, but the destruction is beyond imagination. Immediate support is required from both the government and donor agencies to help those left with nothing but clothes on their backs. And also a reminder that Pakistan is under threat because of global warming and climate change. The authorities have to prepare for the future.
