Tens of thousands of Ethiopians gathered in the capital Saturday for the vibrant Irreecha festival, a thanksgiving celebration that this year underscored a complex mix of cultural resurgence, political symbolism, and lingering community grievances.

Historically, Oromo cultural practices were restricted by previous regimes, but recent reforms have enabled the festival's revival since the late 1990s. The presence of Ethiopia's first Oromo leader, Abiy Ahmed, has further empowered the community, though some believe more could be done to support Oromo cultural promotion.

Oromo Festival reflects Ethiopia's complex shifts

Thousands of people, primarily from Ethiopia's largest ethnic group, the Oromos, gathered in the capital Addis Ababa. Dressed in colorful traditional white clothes, they celebrated the annual Erecha festival, an occasion to express gratitude to God, referred to as Waka by the Oromos. Erecha is a festival for all nations and nationalities. It is a very wonderful holiday, therefore anyone can celebrate it. They can participate because it is a holiday of love, peace and unity. Many Oromos believe they were historically denied the opportunity to practice and promote their cultural traditions by past authorities, including Emperor Menelik II, Emperor Haile Selassie and the military Marxist-Degue regime. In the past, the Oromo people used to celebrate Erecha here, but the former rulers not only prevented the celebration, but also prevented Oromo people from living here. Now, a hundred years later, with the reforms our governments have brought in, our government that has changed Addis Ababa like this, with the reforms it has brought in, we are celebrating it here today. We are very grateful to our government. After enduring prolonged struggles and significant sacrifices, the Erecha festival was reinstated in the late 1990s, coinciding with the fall of the Degue. Even if you try to destroy Oromo culture in 150 years, it is a culture that will not be lost, it will not be touched and it will continue to be passed down from generation to generation. With Abiy as the first Oromo leader of the country, many Oromos feel a renewed sense of empowerment to celebrate and promote their culture. However, some criticize them for not doing enough.
