An NYPD detective was shot in the arm and leg in what authorities describe as a friendly fire incident during an attempted carjacking arrest in Queens. The shooting occurred near the Whitestone Expressway Service Road and 22nd Street as officers tried to apprehend a suspect who was unarmed and has a history of criminal offenses, including a recent arrest and release for theft in Manhattan.

Officials stated that the detective's injuries are not life-threatening and he is expected to make a full recovery. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident. Mayor Adams noted that the detective's wife is expecting a child, and expressed relief that the officer is recovering.

She says he was just arrested and released yesterday for a theft in Manhattan. The mayor gave an update from the scene. During the apprehension, one detective from Queens South Narcotics was shot twice, wounded in the arm and the leg. At this time, it appears this was a friendly fire incident. I'm thankful these injuries are not life-threatening and we expect him to make a full recovery. Mayor Adams also says the wife of the injured detective is expecting a child. Luckily, the detective is doing okay and should make a full recovery.
