Nurses are demanding improved working conditions, citing issues such as overcrowded emergency rooms, inadequate staffing ratios, and workplace injuries, along with higher pay and benefits. Hospital management claims the union's demands are financially unsustainable, while some hospitals have implemented plans to enhance workplace safety and have hired travel nurses to maintain operations.

still no sign of an agreement despite mediators, nurses, union representatives and management from one of the hospital systems meeting at the negotiation tables yesterday. We've got News 12's Brittany Cadet outside of Montefiore Hospital Einstein Campus with the latest this morning. Good morning Brittany, tell us the update. Hey Marcy, good morning. I mean today is day five and it's already a full work week since those nurses walked off the job on Monday. Now yesterday executives from the Hospital of New York Presbyterian along with the New York State Nurses Association were back at the table but this time with mediators but still no resolution. Now there's another chance as more scheduled negotiations are expected to happen tonight. Now 15,000 nurses from five private hospital systems have been on strike all week including right here at Montefiore. They are also calling for better working conditions pointing to overcrowding in emergency rooms, inadequate patient to nurse ratios and staff being hurt on the job. They also want better pay and increased benefits. Montefiore says the union's demands are reckless adding it would cost the hospital more than three and a half billion dollars to grant them what they're asking for. Meanwhile nurses on strike say the hospital hired travel nurses to replace the nurses who walked off the job. And tonight there are more scheduled meetings led by mediators. This time Montefiore and Mount Sinai Hospital are expected to be at that table there with their hospital executives and again mediators are expected to be involved but that's very latest here at Montefiore Hospital here at the Einstein Campus in Morris Park. Yesterday Mount Sinai's CEO sent out a video message saying the union has been harassing care workers who choose to go to work. He says that the support he supports them and will protect them in response to the nurses unions demands. Mount Sinai has says it adopted a five year plan to increase safety back in 2024. New York Presbyterian also maintains it is close committed to workplace security.
