President Trump attributed the unrest to 'professional agitators' and threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act, which would allow the deployment of National Guard troops to the city. 

The mayor of Minneapolis reported that the number of ICE agents in the city now far exceeds the local police force and described the federal presence as an 'invasion.' He condemned the conduct of ICE agents and urged residents to avoid further escalation, warning against responding to federal actions with more chaos.

In scenes that have become all too familiar in the United States, Minneapolis residents protest violently against Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers known as ICE. Amid a wider immigration crackdown across the city, local resident Renee Nicole Good was fatally shot during an altercation with an ICE agent on January 7th. In a city that was already smouldering with anger at the presence of the agents, the event sparked an even greater response. Then, a second shooting. This time, a Venezuelan man was shot in the leg. Authorities allege he attacked an ICE officer trying to arrest him. President Trump is blaming the unrest on what he calls professional agitators and said he would invoke the Insurrection Act if necessary. That would allow him to send National Guard troops into the city, a threat he has made against multiple other cities governed by Democrats. We just discussed it, that it was one of the options that he had constitutionally and we talked about the fact that we're going to continue our operations in Minneapolis and have the resources that we need to get the job done. According to the Minneapolis mayor, the contingent of ICE agents is already five times the size of the city's 600-officer police force. Even without the presence of National Guard troops, he's calling the current deployment of federal officers an invasion. Let's be very clear. I've seen conduct from ICE that is disgusting and is intolerable. If it were your city, it would be unacceptable there too. And for anyone that is taking the bait tonight, stop. That is not helpful. Go home. We cannot counter Donald Trump's chaos with our own brand of chaos. Despite the calls for calm, the intense polarisation looks set to continue on the streets and in the halls of power.
