He Wang, Co-founder of Chinese humanoid robot maker Galbot discusses his company's use of Nvidia's Blackwell-powered 'Jetson AGX Thor' chips. While they are powerful, he says Galbot also has to adopt a diversified strategy to ensure a stable supply-chain in the face of U.S. restrictions.

Galbot, a robotics company based in Shanghai, is using NVIDIA's Jetson AGX Thor chips, built on Blackwell's GPU, to power its humanoid robots. In response to concerns about potential U.S. trade restrictions affecting chip access, Galbot has established a multi-tiered, global supply chain to reduce operational risks and ensure business scalability.

The company remains open to sourcing chips from domestic suppliers, though it currently finds NVIDIA's technology superior for its needs. Galbot recently secured a $153 million investment from Contemporary Ampex, elevating it to unicorn status. The company continues to seek additional funding to support hardware development and the creation of its own embodied AI models, citing the need for significant resources in the competitive robotics sector.

Nvidia-powered robot maker Galbot hedges against U.S. trade risks

Galbot's robots are powered by NVIDIA and the Jetson AGX Thor. This is built on Blackwell's GPU. Now my question is about risk to getting access to these chips to this technology. Are you worried about being affected by any US restrictions? Yeah this is a good question. I think you know NVIDIA Jetson Thor is a very powerful chip and right now we are among the very first few companies that get this chip from NVIDIA and also deploy it into the our humanoid robots. But I think like in Galbot we have to make sure our supply chain is very stable so we build you know multi-tier and the global supply chain and this ensures the stability of our supply chain and also make sure we can lower down the operational risk. So I think like we have different ways to do computing. One way is to add computing inside the robot body. Another way is to build a local network that can use other chips in PC to empower the computing. I think in short our diversified supply chain system will make sure we can scale up our business robustly. Would you consider using any domestic chip makers? Yeah this definitely is an option. Are there any companies that you'd be looking out for? We've been talking about CanberraCon here a lot, to SMIC, Huawei Technologies. Do any of these companies are they able to service what Galbot does? I think you know definitely some companies provide similar chips to NVIDIA OrinX which is the previous generation of edge computing chips used in autonomous cars. And so far I haven't seen any company providing similar things like Jetson Thor. And so in short we are open-minded about our chip providers. And so far we are still you know we at this moment I think Jetson Thor is the best chip we can we can get for edge computing. Contemporary Ampex made an injection of 153 million dollars in your recent funding round. This helped propel Galbot to unicorn status. Is there any more funding that is needed for your company? I think you know humanoid robots is really cutting-edge technology worldwide. Every startup needs a lot of funding and we need to build the hardwares. We need to make sure our hardware is really stable, can operate 24 hours for months, for years. At the same time we need to develop our own foundational model of embodied AI. And what is even more challenging is that you know the data we don't have so much action data robotic action data from the internet. We have to develop our own way to synthesize the data or collect them in the real world. So all of the things need a lot of money. So that's why Galbot is actively looking for more fundings and also the chance to like go to the next stage. And I think such things will be continue for a long time. Any plans?
