One person died and another was badly injured after a small plane crashed in Little Cottonwood Canyon on Sunday.

The Alta area is packed with hikers, bikers, and more getting outdoors for the holiday weekend. But the Summer Road going up Albion Basin is closed this Labor Day as the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office and the National Transportation Safety Board investigate a deadly plane crash that happened Sunday night. FAA information shows it's a Piper Aeroplane that was registered to an LLC in Maryland. According to the flight tracking website FlightAware.com, it had crossed the country from Virginia to Nevada over the last week and a half before entering Utah. Audio recordings by LiveATC.com capture the plane flying through airspace near the Salt Lake Airport. It was shortly after that when Damian Jackson says he saw it heading up towards Alta. We were going up the canyon to take some photos and we saw aircraft hit the ground pretty hard. Jackson and his friends pulled over. Should we get out? Yeah, 100%. And rushed to try to help the two people in the plane's cabin. Definitely heart was pounding there. NTSB officials say they plan to recover the wreckage tomorrow for further examination and a preliminary report can be expected within 30 days of the incident. Several questions are left unanswered tonight, and the NTSB notes that their process to determine a probable cause can be a lengthy one, sometimes taking 12 to 24 months to conclude. We're still waiting to learn the names of both the victims and trying to get an update on the condition of the critically injured person who was taken to the University of Utah Hospital.
