Police in South West Sydney are reviewing an incident at an aged care home where officers used capsicum spray on an 87-year-old resident. The man was reportedly acting violently and wielding a large metal pole with sharp edges, prompting staff to call police. 

Officers deployed the spray after the man refused to put down the pole. He was restrained and taken to hospital for assessment, with no injuries aside from the effects of the spray. Authorities highlighted the complexities of dementia in such incidents and confirmed a review will be conducted to assess police actions.

For more on this story, Tallulah Thompson joins me. Tallulah, what more do we know? Sandra, this all happened around 7.30 last night. The 87-year-old resident was reportedly acting in a violent manner, swinging what's been described as a large metal pole with sharp edges at aged care staff. That's when police were called in. Two officers located the man in the foyer and when he refused to put the pole down, that's when they deployed capsicum spray. He was restrained before being taken to hospital for assessment, but apart from the effects of the capsicum spray, he was not injured. These are very challenging circumstances and I just wanted to emphasise the conduct of this male is no way to reflect the individual, such as the insidious nature of dementia and the challenges it presents. Now the man's family is understood to be very private and didn't want the incident spoken about to the media, but police say there is a public interest in these matters. Of course, two years ago, 95-year-old Claire Nowland died after being tasered by a police officer in her Kuma nursing home, and police then were criticised for their communication missteps about the incident. While the Deputy Commissioner backed his officers' actions last night, a review will be carried out to ensure that nothing could have been done differently.
