Supported by $9 million in state funding, the initiative aims to distribute 100,000 kits to mothers on Medicaid, addressing the needs of new moms and their babies.

Baby to Baby, which has distributed half a billion basic essentials over 14 years, also manufactures its own diapers to reduce costs and increase reach. The organization serves over a million children annually and has responded to more than 100 disasters, providing critical supplies to affected families.

A new effort to support maternal health and newborns in New York State could be a model for states all around the country. New York is partnering with the non-profit Baby to Baby, which supports more than a million families nationwide each year already. And now, $9 million in state funding here in New York will provide families in need with free newborn supply kits, including diapers, but also baby items and products for new moms. Joining us now are Baby to Baby's co-CEOs, Kelly Sawyer-Patrikoff and Nora Weinstein. Ladies, so glad to have you here. What an amazing organization and amazing effort here. So, Nora, the new grant from New York State, this 100,000 maternal health and newborn supply kits to moms on Medicaid, that is a meaningful number. It is. So at Baby to Baby, we distribute basic essentials, and we've distributed half a billion basic essentials in the last 14 years. What this is in New York is that we have a program to combat the maternal health crisis. And we make maternal health and newborn supply kits, like you described, that have diapers and hygiene items and breastfeeding supplies for mom and baby immediately after giving birth. We invited Governor Hochul to our headquarters in Los Angeles. She packed a bag herself. It resonated with her. And she put this $9 million grant into New York. So next year, we will be giving one of our kits to all 100,000 moms giving birth on Medicaid in 2026. So this meets the total need of moms on Medicaid in New York State. We hope it does. You hope it does. That's amazing. And Kelly, how does this expand what you're already doing nationwide? We really serve children across the country. So we serve one million children per year. We've been able to distribute half a billion items. We also serve children in a disaster because we find often children are overlooked in a disaster. So we've been able to provide emergency supplies to over 100 disasters, including most recently the fires in Los Angeles, where we were able to provide 25 million emergency critical items to families who'd lost everything in the fires. So this is the work we do all year long. This is just specifically a new initiative that we started in 2023 for new moms and their babies. And I don't know which one of you to direct this to, but you manufacture your own diapers. Do I have that right? We do. So one of the reasons we started Baby to Baby was because a statistic that one out of two moms in this country struggle to afford diapers. And they're doing things as dire as using newspapers and towels instead of diapers on their babies. So we have done everything possible and tackled diaper need from every angle. And to try to combat the problem in the biggest way, we started manufacturing them ourselves so we could produce them for 80% less than retail and distribute five times more, which has allowed us to distribute 250 million diapers. It's an amazing thing. The impact is huge on these families. A million kids every year, 100,000 new supply kits here in New York State.
