The memorandum of understanding focuses on deepening health cooperation, with particular support for Christian-based health facilities. The agreement is part of a broader U.S. initiative to support African nations whose health systems were affected by USAID funding cuts, with similar deals signed with Rwanda, Uganda, and Eswatini.

Under the agreement, Nigeria will get support that has a strong emphasis on Christian-based health facilities, despite having a slight majority Muslim population. This MOU is a testament to the enduring health partnership between our two nations. It builds on a strong foundation and it boldly deepens our cooperation, aligning our efforts more closely than ever before, and it ensures that our investments, Nigeria and the United States, will deliver sustainable impact. The U.S. is signing deals with a number of African countries whose health systems were crippled after cuts to USAID. Other countries, including Rwanda, Uganda and Eswatini, that have entered similar agreements with the U.S. have previously agreed to receive third-country deportees from the Trump administration.
