Gabrielle has rapidly intensified into a major hurricane southeast of Bermuda. Gusty winds and showers will be possible in Bermuda today and tonight as the center of Gabrielle passes to the east. Large swells are already affecting Bermuda and the U.S. East Coast from North Carolina northward.

Hurricane Gabrielle has intensified rapidly, reaching Category 3 status with sustained winds of 120 miles per hour. The storm's well-defined eye and surrounding thunderstorms indicate significant strengthening as it moves northward near Bermuda. High clouds and waves associated with Gabrielle are already impacting Bermuda, and the system is forecast to continue strengthening in a favorable environment before encountering drier air and wind shear, which may weaken it. Ahead of this weakening, Gabrielle is expected to generate hazardous waves and a high risk of rip currents along much of the east coast.

We're gonna start with Gabrielle. Look at the eye that forms on this thing. Boom! That means it's strengthening because you don't have an eye, you have the center of circulation, but you don't have a well-defined eye and that becomes very, very clear. Winds at 120 miles an hour moving north at 10. It is a cat 3 hurricane at this time. Some of those higher clouds associated with this system going into Bermuda. Here's a look at the visible imagery of it as well and you can see how well defined this is, how you have thunderstorms around the center of this and notice those clouds getting into Bermuda as well and the waves are also getting into Bermuda too. Now as this eventually takes a turn, we're expecting it to gain strength. It's in a good environment for strengthening, but once it gets into that more southwesterly flow, it is also going to get into some drier air and some sheer and that means the winds are going to be coming down with this system. But before that happens, it is going to push waves right to the east coast here. We do have a very bad risk for rip current along much of the east coast beaches.
