As CDOT continues to warn of the dangers of speeding near construction zones on Colorado highways, the agency is preparing to roll out a new type of camera-style system designed to catch drivers going too fast.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is deploying a new camera-based system to monitor speeding in active highway construction zones. The system will initially issue warnings to drivers who exceed the speed limit by 10 miles per hour or more, with fines set to be introduced later in the year. 

Unlike traditional photo radar vans, the new system uses multiple cameras spaced apart to calculate a vehicle's average speed over a set distance. The first deployment will be along Highway 119 between Boulder and Longmont, with future expansion to other areas based on crash history and speed studies. CDOT emphasizes that the placement of these cameras is evidence-based and targeted to improve safety in work zones.

So now starting next monday, the new system will use cameras to issue warnings to drivers going an average of 10 miles an hour or more over the speed limit. Then fines will start in the fall. The first cameras will be along the diagonal highway, which is highway 1 19 between Boulder and Longmont. We are using crash history and speed studies to determine where these systems go. It's not arbitrary. It's smart, targeted and evidence based. And Jason, you were actually just sharing that this is actually going to be working in a little bit of a different way than what people might expect or are used to. Right? So up on the diagonal, this is that road between Boulder and Longmont. They're gonna have cameras that are separated by a distance. So used, we usually see the photo radar vans and they're set up in one spot. So they get you in that one spot. These are actually doing a separation of time. So they take your picture here, take your picture here, they average that distance or they know that distance and then they take your time, how long it took you to get from point to point and then they can issue the ticket based on your average speed. And so it's much different to do average speed than it is just from point or point. Uh and that's going to be a whole different system that we're used to seeing uh there across all of these construction projects. We're gonna see him in a lot different places. I think we're gonna see him in Glenwood Canyon as well.
