Australia is reckoning with its deadliest mass shooting in decades after a father and son opened fire on crowds gathered for a Jewish festival at Bondi Beach. The two suspects reportedly threw homemade pipe and tennis ball bombs at ⁠the crowd before the mass shooting but failed to detonate.

Newly released documents from Australian police reveal that the Bondi Beach shooting could have resulted in more casualties, as the attackers threw four improvised explosive devices into the crowd that failed to detonate before opening fire. The police investigation also found that the attackers had conducted a reconnaissance mission at the beach prior to the incident and had trained with firearms in rural New South Wales.

In response to the attack, the New South Wales Parliament has been recalled to vote on stricter gun laws, including limits on the number of firearms individuals can own. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has apologized to the Jewish community and pledged ongoing efforts to protect their rights. One suspect, Naveed Akram, has been transferred to prison, while his father was killed by police during the attack.

New revelations show Bondi attack could have been even deadlier

Volunteers helped to clear the tributes laid out in memory of the victims of the Bondi Beach shooting. Many will be preserved for the display. In response to the shooting, the Parliament of New South Wales has been recalled in order to vote on tougher gun laws, capping the number of guns a person can own at four or up to ten for groups including farmers. Meanwhile, Australian police have released further documents relating to the investigation, including images of the gunmen training with firearms in rural New South Wales. The police fact sheet says the pair travelled on a reconnaissance mission to the beach prior to the shooting. It also states they threw four improvised explosive devices into the crowd before opening fire but that these failed to explode. Naveed Akram was transferred to prison this Monday. He'd been in hospital being treated for injuries. While his father, Sajid, was killed by police on the day of the attack.

A Russian general was killed by an explosive device underneath his car in Moscow, according to Russian investigators, who say Ukraine's intelligence services may have orchestrated the attack. Ukraine has not commented.
