A fire broke out early Christmas morning in Hamilton Hill, Western Australia, engulfing three homes and forcing residents to evacuate. Neighbours rescued an elderly deaf woman who was trapped inside one of the houses, carrying her to safety through a locked gate as the fire spread.

Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control, but two people were hospitalized for smoke inhalation and several residents were displaced, receiving assistance from Homes West. Police believe the fire may have been deliberately set and are urging anyone with information to contact Crimestoppers.

Early Christmas morning, flames tear through three homes at Hamilton Hill. While most residents evacuated, one elderly woman remained trapped inside. Neighbours running to the rescue. Saw the flames coming from the roof, it was well and truly lit. So I came running over to make sure everyone was alright. Neighbour told me that a lady was there and she was deaf. It was a matter of just saving her, that's all I cared about. Without hesitation, he ran in, smashed down the front door and carried the woman to safety through a locked gate at the back of the property. There was no chance because that ceiling had caved in there as well. So I pulled on the fence and this other guy helped me as well, an Irish guy, we both pulled the fence and ended up getting it down and was able to get her free. Firefighters worked quickly to bring the blaze under control. Crews pulling apart sections of the roof to stop the fire spreading. Two people were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. Another was treated at the scene. It was pretty big. Whole street was covered in emergency vehicles. They were all covered and it was a bit scary for a 12-year-old to see. Multiple residents have now been displaced and are being assisted by Homes West to find alternative accommodation, spending Christmas away from their homes. Police say the fire may have been deliberately lit and urge anyone with information to contact Crimestoppers. Devastating to know that it was lit purposely. Campbell Greaves, 10 News.
