Troops from several states have been deployed in response to a request from the Trump administration, with their assignments including monument security, community patrols, and traffic control.

Local authorities, including DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, have emphasized that the Guard's role should be limited to support and not law enforcement, noting that Guard members are not authorized to make arrests. There is ongoing uncertainty regarding whether the Guard will be armed, as officials have provided conflicting information. The increased federal presence follows a reported surge in arrests, with over 400 people detained in recent weeks.

New developments overnight in the federal takeover of the district, as the National Guard says it is now targeting a handful of metro stations as the crime crackdown continues. And it comes as even more states begin to send troops to the nation's capital. Fonsi's Melanie Alwik, she's live this morning at Union Station, one of the stations that are now targeted by the National Guard, Mel. Hey, good morning guys. Yeah, so right about 6 a.m., as has been happening on a normal basis, the National Guard had pulled up here to the plaza right in front of the station. Now, you can see them pretty casual out here in front of their vehicles. I've looked pretty closely. They don't appear to be carrying arms. A lot of people wondering, well, what exactly are they going to be doing? We have not seen them inside the metro station yet. We do know the Tennessee governor, Bill Lee, said his guard members are responding to a request from the Trump administration to, quote, assist with monument security, community safety patrols, protecting federal facilities and traffic control. And as you mentioned, we now know the mission has been expanded to D.C. metro stations as well. Video here from Defense TV showing members of the 113th wing of the D.C. The task force said Metro Center, Gallery Place and Union Station are among the 10 metro stations the guard will be assigned to. There are 40 metro stations within the District of Columbia. Republican governors in West Virginia, Ohio, South Carolina, Mississippi and Louisiana are also sending guard members up to a thousand more troops total to participate in President Trump's D.C. safe and beautiful task force. Mayor Bowser said the role of the guard should be limited to support. They can't do law enforcement, as far as I know. That is not what I have been advised. And unless their orders have somehow changed, I don't know that they can engage in arrest. But federal officers can now entering the third week of the surge. Attorney General Pam Bondi reports more than 400 people have been arrested, including 135 people in the country illegally. Mayor Bowser has asked D.C. police chief Pamela Smith to address the issue of federal officers sometimes not wearing masks or clearly identifying themselves. An issue that has caused some anxiety among D.C. residents and visitors. And there are also still questions as to whether any of these guard members will be armed. There's been some conflicting information. I can tell you that the Associated Press got a quote from someone with the D.C. National Guard that said that troops may be armed consistent with their mission and training, but did not provide any further information.
