Mount Mulanje Cultural Landscape in southern Malawi has been officially added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, marking a significant milestone for one of Africa’s underrepresented sites.

Mount Mulanje, a 3,000-metre inselberg in southern Malawi, has been officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mountain is home to over 70 endemic plant species, including the Milange cedar, Malawi's national tree. The site is also significant for its spiritual importance to indigenous tribes, who have longstanding traditions and legends connected to the mountain and its waterfalls.

Local leaders and conservationists have welcomed the recognition, noting that it is expected to boost tourism and create jobs in the region. Efforts are ongoing to protect the mountain's unique environment, particularly against threats such as illegal deforestation, with support from the Mount Mulanje Conservation Trust and hopes for increased global awareness and assistance.

Local guides David and Kingsley take us on a tour to show us why. The mountain is endemic to over 70 plant species like the Milange Syad. It's so special just because it is commonly in Milange. So if you find it, let's say, in other places in Blantyne and so on, people they get it from Milange and then plant it. The smells emitted by this grass serve as a double purpose for locals. The blooms have a special smell that helps to keep away the insects outside the house. UNESCO not only recognised the site for its wildlife, but for its spiritual importance to the indigenous tribes who have lived around the mountain. The legend goes that this waterfall is inhabited by the spirits of their ancestors. Our grandparents, if they have got problems in the villages, that is to say maybe there is a pandemic in the village. So they will come up here to offer sacrifices. So people are believing in the spirits, believing in their ancestors, what they will actually tell them. Traditional leaders have welcomed the World Heritage Listing, like Chief Gibson of the Lomwe tribe, who believes it will support local workers. We will get more visitors as people will hear more about Mount Milange. And that will change people's lives here because it will create more jobs. The mountain is home to Malawi's national tree, the Milange cedar. But illegal deforestation has threatened its survival. So the Mount Milange Conservation Trust rolls out projects that teach locals to protect the mountain's environment. So we want to make sure that more of the partners, more of the donors are aware so that they can also assist in the protection. A strive for global awareness now made stronger by the Mountains World Heritage Listing.
