A GTA family is calling for accountability and new hospital policies after a mother died earlier this summer, following childbirth. The family says staff at Mississauga's Credit Valley Hospital didn't act quickly enough to recognise and treat sepsis.

Ravinder Kaur Sidhu, a physiotherapist and mother of three, died from septic shock just days after giving birth at Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga. Her family reports that she showed symptoms of sepsis, such as fever and elevated heart rate, soon after delivery, but medical staff initially dismissed their concerns as normal postpartum symptoms.

According to international guidelines, sepsis treatment should begin within an hour of recognition, but Sidhu was not given antibiotics until more than 24 hours after her symptoms appeared. The hospital stated it could not comment on specific cases but emphasized its commitment to thorough review processes and timely sepsis treatment. Sidhu's family is advocating for new sepsis protocols across Ontario hospitals, while the Ministry of Health acknowledged the case as tragic but did not commit to policy changes.

Mother dies from septic shock after childbirth, family cites delayed care

This wasn't what anyone expected the first few months of baby Ajit's life to look like. His dad, Gurinder Sidhu, is grieving the loss of his wife just days after Ajit was born. She was the center of the universe for our family. His wife, Ravinder Kaur Sidhu, was a physiotherapist and business owner. She had a happy and healthy pregnancy, and when she gave birth to her third child in June at Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga, everything seemed normal. But she died four days later from septic shock, a death her family believes could have been prevented. Sepsis is the immune system's extreme response to an infection, which in turn damages the body's own tissue and organs. It's deadly and has to be treated quickly. It can also be hard to catch. Classically, the symptoms are going to be fever, an elevated heart rate, elevated breathing rate, perhaps some confusion, or at the very least, inability to focus and to concentrate. Within hours of giving birth, Ravinder was showing potential sepsis symptoms, including fever, chills, and an elevated heart rate. Her medical records also show she complained of extreme pain. The next morning, her blood pressure tanked. The reply I always got was, these symptoms are normal. But now I learned that nothing was normal about those symptoms. Ravinder's sister, Kiranjeet Kaur, is an ICU nurse in Buffalo. She saw her sister's vitals on a video call. And looking at it, I literally screamed, like, Ravinder, she's in a shock. He's like, what do you mean? I'm like, she's in a septic shock. Where's the nurses? Where's the rapid response? How did this happen? The family says medical staff dismissed their concerns. International guidelines from the Surviving Sepsis Campaign suggest various steps, including giving broad-spectrum antibiotics within one hour. Ravinder was eventually prescribed antibiotics more than 24 hours after her first symptoms. She died three days later. Their inaction destroyed our family. Now my seven-year-old, six-year-old will never have their mother. She went to the hospital to get a baby and never came out of it. I really hope that no other family has to go through that kind of experience. The hospital said it couldn't comment on specific patients. But in a statement to CBC, it said it takes concerns raised by patients and families very seriously and has a thorough review process. It also said once sepsis has been recognized, the goal is to start treatment within the first hour, while applying sound medical judgment to each case. SIDU wants to see changes at the provincial level, including new sepsis protocols at hospitals throughout Ontario. The Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada has advocated for new clinical tools to monitor patients and pick up on things that could be missed. We're not all practicing in exactly the same way. We can hope that every health care service is operating at its peak efficiency or optimally all the time, but the reality is that we're all humans. The Ministry of Health called the case tragic and troubling, but didn't commit to any policy changes. But I will say that when and if we find that there are improvements that can happen, I have full confidence that that will happen in our systems. SIDU says he's committed to keep pushing for change, motivated by his wife's legacy. My wife was a fighter and just by living with her, I know that what she would have done if something would have happened to me.
