Following the check-in, the mother and daughter were detained in Texas before being flown to Ecuador, while the girl's adult brother remains in detention in Newark.

Like New York City's other public school students, this six-year-old girl from Jackson Heights was supposed to be heading back to the classroom two weeks from tomorrow. She's enrolled at P.S. 89 in Elmhurst. Now her future is very much uncertain. Immigrant advocates tell us this is the girl with her adult brother who's holding her and their mother. They sought asylum after coming to the U.S.-Mexico border in December of 2022. The six-year-old and her mother were deported back to Ecuador following the family's routine immigration check-in at 26 Federal Plaza in Lower Manhattan eight days ago. Governor Kathy Hochul says after that check-in, the girl and her mom were sent to a detention facility in Texas before ICE agents deported them to Ecuador. The girl's adult brother, meantime, is still being held at Delaney Hall in Newark, according to advocates. New York City Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos says she's heartbroken to learn of the deportations and adds no child or family should be uprooted from their community or feel forced to hide in the shadows. Governor Kathy Hochul posted a video statement reacting to the deportations of the girl and her mother. This is cruel. And I say to those who did this, where is your humanity? President Trump, you said you were going after the worst of the worst. You think she's really the worst of the worst? Why can't we work together to go after the truly worst of the worst? The six-year-old is the first known person under the age of 18 in the city to be deported in the president's immigration crackdown. A spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security tells USA Today that the family received final orders of removal from an immigration judge. The school's chancellor here in the city is now reassuring families that schools are safe and staff members are prepared to connect immigrant families to legal resources if needed.
