Rescue workers are searching for victims of a 6.0 magnitude earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan in the middle of the night. More than 800 people were killed. Elizabeth Palmer has the latest.

A major earthquake struck Afghanistan during the night, resulting in the deaths of more than 800 people and the destruction of entire villages. Survivors and local residents began rescue and burial efforts amid collapsed mud brick houses, with many families losing loved ones while they slept.

The Taliban government has deployed limited resources, including helicopters, to reach the injured and transport them to overcrowded hospitals. International aid has been slow, with only a few organizations able to access remote areas. The humanitarian response is further challenged by the withdrawal of most aid groups in 2021 and recent cuts to international funding, leaving Afghanistan with insufficient means to address the disaster.

More than 800 dead following Afghanistan earthquake

When the quake struck in the middle of the night, survivors scrambled to find victims in the dark. Sunrise revealed the devastation, whole villages in ruins. Mud brick houses collapsed on families while they slept. Local people began to bury their dead today, including their children. They did what they could for the wounded, too, in a region hard to get at at the best of times. Afghanistan's Taliban government mobilized the few helicopters it has to reach some of the injured. And get them to hospitals, so crowded that this doctor had to search for a place to lay down three-year-old Nasib Ullah. His twin and his brother were both killed. Their father Mir Zaman said he dug them out of the ruins himself. A Taliban health ministry official appealed to the international community. A few have, like the Red Crescent, and some medical teams have made it into remote areas. But the casualty numbers are sure to keep rising. Most aid organizations pulled out of Afghanistan in 2021 when the Taliban took over. And the country lost even more money earlier this year when USAID funding was cut. So it has really very few resources and certainly not enough to cope with a disaster like this.

The death toll from Afghanistan's worst earthquake in years jumped to over 1,100 with thousands more injured, as difficult terrain hindered rescue efforts in isolated villages of the country's mountainous eastern region.
