Health officials on London, Ont., expect more cases of legionnaires disease to emerge over the next two weeks following a deadly outbreak this summer linked to a meat-processing plant cooling unit.

A deadly outbreak of legionnaires’ disease in London, Ontario, has been linked to an air conditioning unit at a local meat processing plant. So far, four people have died and nearly 90 have been hospitalized, with health officials expecting additional cases in the coming weeks. 

Experts note that legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia, is typically spread through contaminated water droplets from poorly maintained cooling towers. The company involved, Sophina Foods Inc, stated the findings were unexpected and is continuing its investigation. The incident has prompted calls for stricter protocols and legislation regarding cooling tower maintenance to prevent future outbreaks.

We are expecting to see more cases come in over the next two weeks. Already four people have died. Nearly 90 sent to hospital. This outbreak one of two to strike the city in about 15 months. We fully recognize the impact that this outbreak has had on the community. Legionnaires is a severe type of pneumonia. It's not transmitted from person to person. The bacteria can then grow to high levels and if they then become dispersed in water droplets and people breathe those in then they become sick. It was a horrible year. Last year Belinda Given says she was diagnosed with Legionnaires. It was horrifying. It shouldn't have happened. She was put on a ventilator and placed in a medically induced coma. A few doctors didn't think I was going to make it so I surprised them. Given was in hospital for weeks before going home. Experts say outbreaks are often linked to cooling towers part of the HVAC system of industrial buildings and skyrises. If a system is not well maintained the infections can be actually several kilometers away from the source. In a statement Sophina Foods Inc, the company behind the outbreak said the finding was unexpected. Adding it is concerned with this new information and that they are continuing to investigate this fully. Ontario's Ministry of Health didn't say whether the company would face any consequences. In terms of cooling tower practices there are calls for the province to do more. If there was some better protocols in place and more legislation definitely I think the risk would be a lot lower for the population. Even though a source was identified some residents are still on edge. It's kind of scary isn't it when you think about it. Now I'm a little anxious to tell you the honest truth.
