A Montreal teen is facing terrorism-related charges following an investigation that revealed he was allegedly planning an attack on behalf of the Islamic State, according to the RCMP. The minor, whose name cannot be disclosed, published threatening social media comments, targeting 'various groups of people.'

A 17-year-old from Montreal has appeared before the Youth Division of the Court of Quebec, facing three terrorism-related charges. The RCMP alleges the teen was planning an attack on behalf of ISIS, and he has been charged with financing, participating in, and facilitating terrorist activities.

The teen remains in custody while a date for his bail hearing is determined, with the federal Crown prosecutor objecting to bail on grounds of flight risk, risk of reoffending, and concerns for public trust in the judicial system. The investigation alleges he took steps to carry out an attack and posted threatening messages on social media. If convicted, prosecutors intend to seek an adult sentence.

We can't identify the teen, but we know he is 17 years old and he appeared in court today facing three counts linked to terrorism, financing terrorist activities, participating in terrorist activities and facilitating terrorist activities. We saw his mother inside the courtroom and she was crying. The teen himself appeared like he was not really present. At a moment, Justice Martine Nolin was talking to him and she said, I'm not sure if you're listening, but I will continue anyway to talk to you. He was surrounded by three agents and there was also RCMP officers inside the courtroom. So he remains in custody until Monday to determine a date for his bail hearing. Because we believe there's a risk that he would not come to court when so ordered. Secondly, we also believe there are grounds to fear that he will commit another criminal offence while waiting for the next court date for trial. And thirdly, that it would, the fact of being released under the circumstances here, which I won't comment in great detail because the evidence is not out yet, but it would basically affect the trust that the public has in the courts, in the judicial system and the bail system more particularly. The teen was arrested on Wednesday in an apartment in the Côte des Neiges area, that's in Montreal. So the investigation alleges that he was taking various steps to carry out at least one attack on behalf of the Islamic State. And he was also allegedly posting threatening messages on social media.
