Originally created in 1903 by Lizzie Maggie as a protest against the economic practices of the Gilded Age, the game was later popularized by Charles Darrow, who sold the rights to Parker Brothers in 1935, leading to its commercial success.

Over the years, Monopoly has undergone numerous transformations, resulting in more than 300 licensed versions worldwide. Despite its widespread popularity, many players continue to adapt the rules, and the game has recently found new life as a digital app. Lizzie Maggie's contributions, once overlooked, have now been acknowledged.

Finally, tonight, 90 years later, and we are still passing go. The classic American board game Monopoly and its top-headed mascot are celebrating nine decades of family fights started over rent owed at properties and hotels. The game was invented in 1903 to protest the robber barons of the Gilded Age. An unemployed man named Charles Darrow heard about it, created his own version, and sold the rights to Parker Brothers. In 1935, the company then had the good and capitalist idea of renaming it Monopoly. It has gone through several transformations over the years with more than 300 licensed versions and after all that time, no one really knows the rules, it's best to make them up as you go. We played a whole bunch during the pandemic, took the kids off the screens, which is a great thing, and now it's on an app, so go figure. We got a shout out to Lizzie Maggie, though, who created it in 1903. Her history was erased until recently. Also, always hide a 500 somewhere. Good idea.
