Carolina Vilger, a German backpacker who was missing for 12 days in remote bushland in Western Australia, has spoken publicly for the first time since her rescue. In a statement from hospital, she credited her survival to the support she received during the search and thanked both medical staff and rescuers for their care.

Vilger explained that she left her car after losing control of the vehicle, which rolled down a slope and left her with hand injuries and confusion. She shared a photo from her hospital bed, appearing relaxed and grateful. Vilger is expected to remain in hospital for several more days and plans to continue her travels in Australia once she is discharged.

Grace Barlow is live for us tonight outside the hospital where Carolina Vilger is recovering. So Grace, what has she had to say? Well, Carolina was lost in some fairly rugged and remote bushland. She says she believes she survived thanks to the incredible support she received during the search. She's released a photo of herself in hospital looking relaxed and happy. It's a far cry from the images we saw last week when she was rescued from the wheat belt and airlifted back to Perth. In the statement she revealed why she left her car, even though she had water, food and clothing there. She said she lost control of the vehicle and it rolled down a slope. She suffered hand injuries as a result and was left in a state of confusion. That's when she walked away and got lost. Carolina was very complimentary of the care she's received both in hospital and from rescuers and well-wishers, saying it had taught her what it means to be part of a true community. So Carolina was beyond grateful. She's due to remain in hospital for the next few days. And as we've heard, she doesn't intend to fly home straight away, rather continue on the rest of her trip around Australia. Sandra. One very lucky lady. All right, Grace. Thank you.
