Last year, schools in North Kivu were forced to close for weeks due to fighting between M23 rebels and government forces, but this year marks the first school term under rebel control in Goma.

Despite concerns about security and teacher pay, all schools in the region have reopened, and the national curriculum continues to be taught. Authorities report that schools are secure and teachers will be paid by the state, while families emphasize the importance of education and hope for peace for the younger generation.

The parents are hoping that their children will complete a full school year. Last year, schools in North Kivu had to close for several weeks due to fighting between the M23 rebels and government forces. Even today, when you enter your classrooms, you will keep your mouths shut. No one is allowed to speak without the teacher's permission. A strict reminder from the headmistress, and then school life returns to its normal rhythm. The M23 has controlled the city of Goma since last January. This is the first school year under rebel control. Some of the parents were afraid to send their children back to class. For this history teacher, there's no time to waste. He's started his lesson despite the sparse attendance. Not all the students are here today, but hopefully tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, they will be here. The Congolese national curriculum will still be taught in the classrooms of North Kivu. And despite teachers demanding a pay hike, all of them have showed up for the start of the school year. We have no closed schools. In all the areas liberated by the AFC M23, we have the reports. All the schools are well secured and classes have started normally. All teachers will have their salaries paid by the Congolese state. For many families in Goma, the most important thing is that their children receive an education. And everyone is hoping for lasting peace for the younger generation, which for their whole lives have known nothing but war.
