In Michoacán, Mexico, drones are being utilized to scatter pre-germinated seeds over isolated forest areas that have been severely affected by recent fires. The drones can carry up to 20 kilograms of seeds and are currently being used to reforest 10 hectares in two designated zones. 

Michoacán has experienced significant forest loss due to fires, with nearly 100,000 hectares burned in the previous year and almost 40,000 more since then. The reforestation strategy, which is also used in countries like Australia and Brazil, is being implemented in collaboration with local communities. While the method is still being evaluated for its effectiveness, experts hope it will help restore the region's forests.

This drone is carrying pre-germinated seeds. They will be scattered over isolated parts of the forests in this western state of Mexico. We use a drone which has the capacity to carry 20 kilograms of weight in addition to the weight it already has. Then we combine these three seeds to spread across two polygons that we have here, which together total 10 hectares. Michoacán is one of the states hit hardest by forest fires in Mexico, with nearly 100,000 hectares of forest burned last year, and nearly 40,000 hectares since the beginning of this one. Experts and locals alike hope to reforest these lands that have been ravaged by the flames. The great opportunity that arises after a fire is that the herbaceous vegetation is eliminated, which allows the seed to reach directly to the soil, and we expect the germination percentage to be around 30 percent. It is a strategy that still needs to prove its effectiveness regarding the success of species germination, but we know it is used in Australia, in Brazil, in other places. And I repeat, I believe that any type of innovation in favor of bringing back nature is important. Their efforts are carried out in cooperation with local communities, which provide some of the seeds, and facilitate the work of reforestation.
