A survivor of the methanol poisoning incident at a hostel in Laos, which killed six people, is calling for stronger action from Laos authorities, and better education of tainted alcohol in schools.

A group of travellers in Laos consumed bootleg alcohol contaminated with methanol, resulting in the deaths of six people, including two teenagers from Melbourne. Bethany Clark, who survived the poisoning, is advocating for better information at international terminals and the inclusion of alcohol safety education in school curriculums. 

Laos authorities are investigating the incident but have declined assistance from the Australian Federal Police. Despite recommendations for charges against 13 individuals linked to the hostel and distillery, there have been no recent updates. The hostel involved is set to reopen under a new name, prompting further calls for accountability and memorialisation of the site.

The bootleg liquor killed six travellers including Melbourne teenagers Bianca Jones and Holly Bowles. Surviving the spiking, Bethany Clark had to watch her childhood best friend's life support turned off. We would have had the same things to drink, it's just that my body processed it differently. Eight months since the poisoning with no answers, Bethany is sounding the alarm. I can't live with the idea that this could happen to someone else. She's campaigning for information at international terminals across the world and wants education on the risks of tainted alcohol built into the school curriculum. A re-enactment of what could happen, you know the Danish girls that were involved, they were vomiting blood which is obviously really scary. Laos authorities are running the investigation into the deaths and have so far refused help from the AFP. Two months ago it was revealed local police recommended charges against 13 people at the hostel and distillery but there's been no update since. We would expect that there would be criminal charges laid and an investigation take place as quickly as possible. Within weeks the hostel is set to reopen under a new name. To have those very very minor hand slapping charges is just outrageous. It's ruined so many people's lives. They shouldn't be reopening in that same place, that whole location should just be memorialised now. After surviving a holiday from hell, Bethany's message is simple. Steer clear, drink beer.
