Danzaki, who played for Western United, and Hirayama, who used insider information to place bets, each received a $5,000 fine and criminal convictions, significantly less than the maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

Both men expressed remorse and provided letters of apology to the court. The convictions may affect Hirayama's student visa status, while Danzaki plans to return to Japan. The magistrate described their actions as a betrayal of trust in competitive sports.

Mr Hirayama has contacted the department about the charges and has been advised to give them an update on this matter. Danzaki plans to return to Japan to be with his wife and daughter.
