Chris Palma, Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Penn State University, joins the AccuWeather Network to share the top astronomy events to mark down on your September calendar.

September features several noteworthy astronomy events. The full moon this month is known as the 'corn moon,' a name rooted in Native American traditions marking the corn harvest season. This month's full moon will also coincide with a lunar eclipse, but it will not be visible in the United States as it occurs during daylight hours there.

Additionally, Saturn will reach opposition, making it appear at its largest, brightest, and closest to Earth for the year. This event provides an excellent opportunity for sky watchers and telescope users to observe Saturn in detail.

Mark these September astronomy events on your calendar

Well September brings a change in the seasons and a few stunning sights in the night sky. Joining us with what to watch for is Professor Chris Palma, Astronomy and Astrophysics Professor at Penn State's Eberly College of Science. I really need to get my telescope. Oh my gosh, every month, every month. I hear September's full moon is called the corn moon. Why is that? And I heard there's also a lunar eclipse this month. Will we be able to see it? Yeah. So, I mean, drive around Pennsylvania and you should hopefully figure out why we're calling this the corn moon, right? It's corn harvesting time. So the moon has for a very, very long time been our calendar, right? So we use it to track the months and since it's corn harvest time, a lot of Native American cultures in particular called this month's full moon something like the corn harvest moon. You're also right. This month's full moon is a lunar eclipse. Unfortunately, it's not going to be visible in the United States. The moon passes through Earth's shadow in a relatively few hours compared to the whole day that it is full and it's just going to happen to pass through the shadow during daytime for us. So we're not going to see the lunar eclipse this month. And Chris, unfortunately, 20 seconds. What else can we look forward to? Yeah. September 21st, Saturn at opposition. It will be the biggest, brightest, and closest to Earth this year. So when you get that telescope out, look for Saturn later this month. It should look beautiful. All right.
