President Trump has indicated optimism about reaching a peace agreement in Ukraine, suggesting that Russian President Vladimir Putin might be willing to make a deal as a personal favor. While some American allies have publicly expressed gratitude for Trump's efforts, there is widespread skepticism among European leaders regarding Putin's willingness to end the conflict. 

Concerns have been raised that any eagerness for a deal could result in Ukraine being pressured to cede territory to Russia in exchange for security guarantees, which critics argue may not prevent future aggression. Ukrainian officials and European allies emphasize the importance of not rewarding Russia for its invasion or compromising Ukraine's position in negotiations.

Many in Europe skeptical as Trump hints at deal with Putin

In a revealing moment yesterday, caught on a hot mic, he seemed to suggest that Vladimir Putin might agree to it as a personal favour. I think he wants to make a deal with me. I really want to thank you for your leadership. And show the gratitude his administration has requested. Thanks so much, Mr President. If I can, first of all, thank you for your attention and thank you very much for your efforts. But many in Europe are sceptical that Vladimir Putin really wants to end the war. And some are worried that in his eagerness for a deal, President Trump may try to pressure Ukraine into giving up territory to Russia in return for security guarantees that won't stop Putin from invading again in the future. So of course it hurts to see that Russia is not being pressured, that nothing has been done to Russia. Oleksandra Ustinova is a member of Ukraine's parliament who's played a key role in lobbying the US for military aid. Do you think that President Trump understands Ukraine and this war? Or is he somewhat naive? I think that President Trump still believes that Putin can be negotiated. And we, having all of these years of negotiating Vladimir Putin, do not believe a single word he says because he always lies and breaks his own word. America's European allies do want a lasting peace in Ukraine. But they don't want Vladimir Putin to be rewarded for his invasion. And they don't want Ukraine to be backed into a corner.
