Manitoba has declared its second provincial state of emergency in two months due to worsening wildfires that have forced the evacuation of thousands of residents. The fires, intensified by recent lightning strikes and extremely dry conditions, have burned approximately one million hectares, nearly 11 times the 20-year average for the region.

The Royal Canadian Air Force and commercial aircraft have been mobilized to assist in evacuating communities such as Garden Hill First Nation and Snow Lake. With hotel accommodations at capacity, Winnipeg's convention centre is being prepared to house up to 7,000 evacuees. Firefighting efforts continue as more than 100 fires remain active across the province.

Oh my gosh, this is no good. Flames started reaching over the treetops in the day. By night, this wildfire reached the edges of Garden Hill First Nation forcing a rapid evacuation requiring the Royal Canadian Air Force to help in an airlift along with commercial aircraft to begin moving about 4,000 people. Evacuees arriving in Winnipeg, Daschle Fidler is anxious. It's either my house is going to be still standing or yeah, it's going to be gone. Meanwhile, this fire has another 1,000 people leaving the town of Snow Lake under evacuation order for a second time in just weeks. At 12.01 p.m. today, we declared a provincial state of emergency. Manitoba's premier again declaring a state of emergency to secure accommodations for new evacuees saying Winnipeg's convention centre will be set up to house up to 7,000 people. About 6,600 people are still displaced by earlier fires. Hotel rooms are scarce. We're pretty much maxed out at capacity there in terms of what we can access in the next few days. Firefighters were making progress over the last couple of weeks. Lightning in recent days across Manitoba's extremely dry central and northern regions sparked new fires. About 1 million hectares or 10,000 square kilometres has burned so far this year. So what we're looking at is somewhere in the neighbourhood of nearly 11 times the 20-year average. When it's getting that close, you move people out, I guess, you know. You have to do what you have to do. You can't be assuming that it isn't going to come and then all of a sudden it turns.
