A family has been attacked in a home invasion in Guildford in Sydney's west. The two masked intruders remain on the run after what police believe was a case of mistaken identity.

A family in Guildford West, New South Wales, was subjected to a violent home invasion when two masked men forced entry and stabbed the 41-year-old father multiple times. The man's wife attempted to protect their three children during the attack, and neighbours responded to cries for help, chasing the intruders from the scene.

Police believe the attack was a case of mistaken identity, noting the family has no criminal connections and was not the intended target. The father remains in stable condition at Westmead Hospital and is scheduled for surgery. The suspects fled in a white sedan and remain at large.

They stabbed the 41-year-old father several times while his wife tried to intervene and shield her three young children from the intruders. It was a very bad condition because when he tried to defend himself, the big knife he said he tried to strike him and he had a big cut, a very big cut. Help! Help! Help! Help! Help! Help! Please help! Neighbours heard his cries for help and raced over. The kids screaming, every neighbour's here, out from the scream. It's a horrendous incident and it's something we don't take lightly. The neighbours chased the two hooded men out of the home and down the street before they fled in a white sedan. I don't know who people are, I don't know. Police believe it's a case of mistaken identity. We believe it's a targeted attack. The family involved have no criminal links so we believe they were after somebody else. The father of three was taken here to Westmead Hospital where he remains in a stable condition. He's due to have surgery on his hand tomorrow.
