Prosecutors presented evidence that Lenderos, who had a personal and financial relationship with Markham, stole over $250,000 from her and was linked to the crime through DNA evidence.

Lenderos was arrested in Mexico in 2023 after hiding for 11 years and extradited to Montgomery County, Maryland. His attorneys dispute the forensic evidence and deny his involvement. Lenderos faces up to 30 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for February.

Tonight, we are hearing from prosecutors and the brother of an American University professor murdered in her home. The killer, a lover turned con man, just convicted in a case that made headlines here more than a decade ago. Bob Barnard's in Bethesda with the story tonight. This is a crime that has haunted many people for 15 years. The murder of a woman living alone in her home here in Bethesda back on October 25th, 2010. The murder scene was inside this house along Massachusetts Avenue in the Glen Echo section of Bethesda. Sue Markham was 52 years old, found beaten with a liquor bottle and strangled inside her home that October day 15 years ago. Her killer, Jorge Lenderos, now 55 years old, was convicted of second degree murder after an eight day jury trial in Rockville. Prosecutors say he was her yoga and Spanish teacher. They became romantic and then he invested her money with disastrous results. During the course of the time that Mr. Lenderos was handling Sue's finances, she lost a total of $312,000. We believe that the financial records show, and this was presented to the jury, that the defendant actually directly took $252,000 from her that he stole. Prosecutors say DNA at the crime scene on her neck and under her fingernails ultimately tied him to the crime. They say Markham and Lenderos were drinking from shot glasses right before the murder. What sparked the violence that night? They're not sure. All we know is that at some point he attacked her and you can see the trail of her blood and hair leading down the stairs to her ultimate lying place. Prosecutors say Lenderos staged the crime scene to look like a break-in and burglary gone bad. He was ultimately arrested in Mexico and brought back to the U.S. and Montgomery County in 2023 after hiding out there for 11 years. As for Sue Markham, she was a longtime accounting professor at American University. Person after person after person has told me that taking her class changed the course of their careers and turned them into accountants. In a statement to Fox 5, Mr. Lenderos' attorneys say he did not kill Sue Markham, that there are no witnesses placing him at the scene or here in Maryland for that matter, and that the forensic evidence has been heavily disputed. That said, his sentencing is in February. He faces up to 30 years in prison.

There has been a sharp escalation in bloodshed in the conflict since Rapid Support Forces fighters captured the city of al-Fashir.
