Police responded to a family home in Grasmere, NSW, after concerns were raised for a man's welfare. During the attempted arrest of 20-year-old Andrea Sirachi, officers allege he threw a spear at one probationary constable and stabbed another with a sword, resulting in serious injury. 

Sirachi, who was out on bail and has a history of mental illness, was subdued with a taser and taken into custody. He has been charged with several offences, including the attempted murder of two probationary constables, and remains in hospital under police guard after being refused bail.

Calling police to their family home, parents concerned for their son's welfare. There was some shouting, quite a substantial amount of police activity going on there. Just after 5pm yesterday, in Sydney's South West, two senior and two probationary constables attempted to arrest Andrea Sirachi after reports he had breached an AVO. The 20-year-old, out on bail and with a history of mental illness, is accused of throwing a spear at one of the young officers just 12 weeks on the job, then allegedly stabbing another, a 28-year-old, with a sword. I've watched the body-worn video, it's extremely confronting, but their actions and bravery and courage and the maturity that these people have shown as junior police officers is amazing. Sirachi, known to police, is tasered, tackled and taken into custody as a backyard turns a crime scene. Police seized a hatchet, a spear and a large sword, about 50cm long. It's not the sort of thing you want to go down and stick your nose in. The severely injured probationary constable, with six months' experience, was flown to Liverpool Hospital last night, undergoing surgery this afternoon on a 20cm gash to his right thigh. Two tourniquets were used to stem the bleeding, giving crucial first aid to their colleague that potentially has saved his life. Authorities claim Sirachi lunged at officers before a single word had been exchanged. He's now accused of a string of offences, including the attempted murder of two probationary constables. Police are confronted day in, day out by violent situations like this. It escalated extremely quickly. Sirachi was today refused bail and remains in hospital under police guard.
