From the junta's staunchest defender to its fiercest critic, after being dismissed in 2024, former Malian Prime Minister Shogel Maiga is now behind bars, accused of corruption. Maiga's supporters and rights groups say this is nothing less than an attempt to crush the opposition. If the most prominent opposition leaders are arrested and imprisoned, including Shogel, who once gave the junta credibility, then I believe today the junta credibility is greatly weakened. A dramatic fall from grace for the man who, five years ago, led weekly protests that toppled Mali's elected government, paving the way for the coup that brought the junta to power. He went on to become the prime minister, and in a 2023 interview with Al Jazeera, he explained why he once believed the military could safeguard Mali's democracy. We must found the Malian state again, so that no political power can ever create the conditions for a return to unconstitutional order. But since then, Junta leader Assimi Goita has dissolved all political parties, jailed leading civil society figures, and extended his rule for another five years, renewable indefinitely. Just 50 kilometers from Bamako, you're still in danger. Al Qaeda's affiliate, JNIN, controls most of the territory. The only way forward now is for President Goita to change course, free political prisoners, release activists and journalists, and open a national dialogue that leads to real democratic elections. And just last week, several Malian officers and a French embassy staff were arrested, accused of plotting to overthrow the military government.
