Mali has launched an educational initiative using artificial intelligence to teach students in local languages such as Bambara, following the country's decision to remove French as an official language in 2023. The education ministry partnered with Robots Mali, an AI company, to produce over 100 illustrated stories in Bambara, using tools like ChatGPT and Leonardo for writing, translation, and illustration.

The program aims to help students connect words with meanings more quickly and address the lack of books in Malian languages. While French remains prevalent in classrooms, the initiative reflects Mali's effort to promote indigenous languages and reduce the influence of its former colonial ruler.

Although Mali removed French as an official language in 2023, it is still present everywhere, including in classrooms. Malian authorities hope artificial intelligence can change that, by helping students learn to read and write in local languages they already speak with friends and family. It's good, it helps me speak better with my friends. All of this is good, at school we only speak French. Bambara is our language, we should prioritise it. To achieve this goal, the education ministry has called on robots Mali. The AI company has produced more than a hundred stories in Bambara. Since the stories are also illustrated, it teaches them to make the connections between words and their meaning very quickly. These children can already read French, so with them it's easy. If I'm with children who don't speak French, or children who are illiterate, then I have to start with the basics, beginning with the letters. AI programmes like ChatGPT and Leonardo are used to write, translate and illustrate the stories. It makes me proud to see my little brothers and sisters learning with so much joy. Robots Mali hopes to provide a solution to the lack of books in Malian languages. This initiative illustrates Mali's will to break free from the lasting influence of its former colonial ruler.
