The M23 rebel administration, which controls Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo's North Kivu region, has extended the operating hours at the Grande Barrière border crossing with Rwanda. Previously open from early morning until mid-afternoon under Congolese government authority, the crossing now remains open until midnight, a change intended to benefit small traders and accommodate increased cross-border movement.

Local civil society groups have welcomed the extended hours, citing economic benefits for both Congolese and Rwandan communities. However, concerns remain that the move could heighten diplomatic tensions, as the DRC government continues to accuse Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebels—a claim Rwanda denies. With Goma's airport closed since the rebels took control, the border crossing has become increasingly vital for both local and international travelers.

M23 rebels extend opening hours at DRC-Rwanda border

At the Grande Barrière between Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Roubavu in Rwanda, movement never stops. Endless lines stretch on both sides of the border and these flows are unlikely to slow down. The AFC M23 rebel administration in North Kivu has extended the crossing hours at the Grande Barrière. Under Kinshasa's authority, the border was opened from 6am to 3pm, a window now extended through midnight. This measure is said to especially benefit small cross-border traders. This is good news because the time has been extended. There will no longer be pressure from the closure at 3pm. If we want to cross at 3pm, we can. If it's 6pm, as we like. It's really good. For travellers, it was a bit difficult to travel since there was no airport. But with the extended hours, people can travel without any problem. The AFC M23 administration announced the decision last week. Authorities justified this measure by a migratory influx between the two countries that rebels say they hope to facilitate. Movement has increased, which is why we also extended the hours. We came for the people, we must help the people. That's how it is. We cannot stop the movement of more than 2 million people here in Goma. No, it's impossible, because of the principle of good neighbourliness that guides the behaviour of states. We are eternal neighbours with Rwanda. The DRC accuses Rwanda of supporting M23 rebels which have controlled Goma since January. Kigali continues to deny it. Local civil society welcomed the extended hours, but fears Kinshasa will reinforce its allegations against Kigali. Economically, this collaboration between the Congolese people and the Rwandan people benefits both sides. But diplomatically, we can expect Kinshasa to further intensify its accusations. Since the M23 rebels took control of the city in January, Goma International Airport has remained closed. For many travellers, both local and international, the only alternative remains transit through Rwanda. This situation reinforces the centrality of the Goma-Rubavo border, which is already ranked among the busiest in the world.
