Summer in Lebanon usually brings hundreds of millions of dollars into the economy, with both expats and tourists visiting the country. But the past five years of economic crisis and war have meant disappointing numbers for merchants.

The Hamra district in Beirut, known for its cultural attractions, has seen fewer visitors following an economic crisis, the Beirut port explosion, and renewed conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. 

Despite ongoing security concerns and travel warnings from many countries, some improvement in business has been noted, particularly with visitors from Kuwait and Iraq. Efforts to make Beirut more welcoming, such as removing political posters, have been implemented, but the absence of Saudi tourists—previously a mainstay—remains a challenge. Many in Lebanon remain hopeful that stability will eventually draw tourists back, helping to support the country's struggling economy.

The Hamra district of Beirut is often called the soul of the capital. It's known for art, music and shopping, long attracting both locals and tourists alike. And as high season for tourism draws to a close, some are still getting their last bits of Lebanese sun. It's a very beautiful country with nice vibes. Thank God everything is good. It is secure. We go out at night, we walk, there are no problems. Beirut has seen dwindling tourism numbers over the last five years. In 2019, an economic crisis hit. In 2020, the Beirut port's explosion. And when recovery looked on its way last summer, heavy fighting broke out between Israel and Hezbollah, sending thousands fleeing. While Israeli strikes continue, restaurateurs say business is beginning to pick up. This summer was a bit better than the last, but still it's slow. Of course tourism was influenced by the war here, the war in Iran. Some Kuwaitis are coming in, some Iraqis. Those are the people we saw. In an effort to boost tourism, political posters and flags have been removed from main areas of Beirut this year. The problem we are facing is that most countries around the world have issued warnings against coming to Lebanon. Western countries have issued warnings and Saudi Arabia has banned its citizens from traveling here. And Saudi visitors used to be the backbone of our tourism sector. He believes the return of tourists relies on one key ingredient. Give us peace and we'll give you something that amazes the world. Many in Lebanon hope a tourism revival could help the country's embattled economy. It's hard to forecast tourism in a country that always seems to be reckoning with a different form of crisis. But hope stems from the fact that after every disaster, be it the civil war, the 2006 war or even more recent events, people have always been determined to return.
